Description:

John Freund was born in 1930 within an educated family and longstanding České Budějovice, a city about 160 kilometers south of Prague in the southern part of Bohemia, a province of Czechoslovakia. John Freund's father, Gustav, was a dedicated and appreciated pediatrician. His family was, in the words of John Freund, "entrenched" in České Budějovice: for generations, they were judges, teachers and businessmen. John Freund's mother, Erna, grew up in the Czech town of Pisek and had received an exemplary education. She inculcated in her two sons, John and Karel, the love of literature and music. Musicians, scientists, publishers, bankers and government officials - - the extended family on both sides lived in Vienna and Prague. John Freund was the only survivor of his family, his father, his mother and older brother who all died in the Nazi camps. On 12 March 1948, John Freund left Prague with a group of thirty children under 18 years of age to start a new life in Canada.
