A teacher and students, all wearing gas masks in case of attacks, in the basement at Greek Road School in South East London in 1941. The teacher points to the alphabet, which is chalked on the blackboard. Although many schools were evacuated during the war, many chose to stay and 'make the best of it', sometimes converting cellars and basements into makeshift classrooms.
